When engaging in ship battles, try dropping a keg of gunpowder in the water behind your ship while being pursued. Once the enemy ship gets close enough, shoot the keg and watch the fireworks! It can give you a good chance to escape or turn the tide in your favor. Just be sure to aim true and time it right for maximum impact!
