As a Barbarian, I rely on my whirlwind skill to quickly take down groups of enemies. For more single-target damage, I switch to Berserk. The key is to stay mobile and avoid getting surrounded.
As for other classes, Sorceress with her chain lightning can clear crowds effectively. Paladins are great for their auras like Conviction to lower enemy resistances.
